Remove yourself from FamilyTreeNow

Estimated time: 10 minutes. Difficulty: easy.

Steps

  1. Open the FamilyTreeNow opt-out page. (It is also linked from "Do Not Sell My Personal Information" in the site footer.)
  2. Enter an email address you can open right now, solve the hCaptcha and click "Begin Opt Out Procedure". A throwaway address is fine — it only has to receive one link.
  3. Search for yourself: first and last name, city, state and birth year. Keep it loose — a middle name or exact address can hide your listing. Click "Search".
  4. Click "View Details" on the record that is you, check the details, then click the red "Opt Out This Record" button. Only one record per pass — old addresses or a maiden name mean repeating from step 3.
  5. Check your inbox (and spam) for an email titled "Please complete your opt out request" and click the link. It expires within 24 hours; miss it and you start over. No phone number or ID is required.
  6. FamilyTreeNow says the record disappears within 72 hours. Search familytreenow.com again after that to confirm.
The opt-out covers your record only, not the relatives listed on it — they each need their own. FamilyTreeNow re-imports public records, so a fresh listing can appear months later. Re-check every six months.
